We are Not Postponing Elections - INEC

Anxious Nigerians trapped by lack of cash and fuel scarcity as Elections approaches, have received confirmation from the Election Commission headquarters that rumors of possible election postponement are not true.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued the announcement confirming to Nigerian that its chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, is not considering any postponement, and that all preparation remain in high gear.

Daily Trust Newspaper, in reporting the issue further quoted β€œthe commission will not and is not contemplating postponing the 2023 general elections. Nigerians should disregard it.”  That was after a widely circulated social media post that raised the alarm, citing Naira shortage as the reason that forced INEC to go back to the drawing board.

The electoral commission also used social media handle, twitter in particular, to refute the fake report

The Nigerian general Elections is scheduled to start on Saturday February 15, 2023.

The top three (3) functions of the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria, as contained in Section 15, Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 2 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) include the following:

 

(i)                  Organise, undertake and supervise all elections to the offices of the President and Vice-President, the Governor and Deputy Governor of a State, and to the membership of the Senate, the House of Representatives and the House of Assembly of each state of the federation;

(ii)                Register political parties  in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and Act of the National Assembly; and

(iii)               Monitor the organization and operation of the political parties, including their finances; conventions, congresses and party primaries.
